Feeling creatively stuck? Discover how to break through creative stagnation and reignite your passion for design work.

Feeling stuck creatively is one of the main issues design professionals face at work or in their own creative practices at home.

Using grounded mindset techniques to re-frame our internal stories is a great way to overcome the stagnation and boredom that may be causing the feelings of frustration, confusion, and exhaustion plaguing you or your friends this summer.

Summary: Feeling creatively stuck? You're not alone. This affects architects, interior designers, and creative professionals worldwide. Here's what you'll learn:

  • Recognize the Signs: The "I've seen it all before" loop drains inspiration, happiness, and creative energy without you even noticing.

  • Understand the Timeline: Mid-year burnout peaks as work keeps you indoors instead of outside playing with friends and family.

  • Rewire Your Brain: Shift from seeing everyday environments as boring to viewing them as fresh sources of inspiration.

  • Try the 15-Minute Mindfulness Walk: A simple and quick grounding exercise.

  • Boost with Affirmations: Repeat a supercharging affirmations with each step.

The Hidden Cost of Creative Burnout

Back in 2019, The World Health Organization defined burn-out as a “syndrome” resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed.

Archinect’s Mental Health Survey in 2023 found that burnout is common among those who are experiencing stress, both in school and out in the profession.

The cost of this burnout going untreated by the profession is a lot of architects feeling defeated by the industry and eager to find something with a “normal” work load. The general consensus is that a lot of stress at work, compounded by living in a stressful world, is now a symptom of living in today’s western world.

When we are creative folks burnt out to the point of feeling stuck creatively, our entire livelihood is at stake. This is why I think it’s important to start doing grounded mindset practices like self-hypnosis and this quick mindfulness technique outlined below.

Is it possible to break a mindset loop? Yes!

Understanding the “I’ve Seen it All Before” Loop

Overcoming creative stagnation and the “I’ve seen it all before” loop that often comes out of the routine of life can be a real challenge for architects, interior designers, and other creative professionals.

Getting stuck in a rut, both in our daily schedule and in our mental stories, can lead us to feel frustrated and overwhelmed. You might think that this “I’ve seen it all before” loop is helpful, but I don’t think it is. I think it is a story loop that breeds negative feelings and stress, and when we are stressed long enough, we may burn out.

Why Mid-Year Burnout Hits Design Professionals Hard

By the time we reach the mid-point in the year, we can often feel overwhelmed and burnt out.

Seasonally, the Summer is a time for play and joy… but those of us functioning within the confines of the “9 to 5” (more like “8 to 8” these days, right?) job, don’t get to enjoy much time off for play. This can often translate to a decline in joy, and sometimes even our overall sense of happiness.

This lack of playtime and the growing attitude of “I’ve seen it all before” can be a creativity killer.

This attitude can make us numb to the beauty in our everyday life… and if it continues unchecked, it can lower our inspiration and reduce our mental capacity and overall energy for creative work. As designers, its important for us to easily access our creativity, becoming numb to our surroundings and everyday tasks isn’t how we do that.

Turning work creativity back into play

Most of us need (and want) to be creative at work: this shows up in our ability to solve problems and respond effectively to our coworkers and clients. This might not be obvious to you, but when you evaluate the process of problem solving for clients, you start to see that the creative juices of design and art translate into the energy and process needed to meet clients and coworkers needs.

The power of curiosity to reconnect with your creativity

In my opinion, one of the best ways to reconnect with your creativity is through curiosity.

When we rewire our brain to see everyday environments as fresh sources of inspiration rather than cliches, we can rekindle the creative fire.

To help with this process, I’m going to share a quick 15-minute grounding and mindfulness exercise that can help you tap into your curiosity and get your creative juices flowing.

Give it a try today (Bonus: you get to go outside for some fresh air, movement, and sunshine. All things that boost creativity!)

A 15-Minute Grounding Mindfulness Exercise

Step-by-Step: How to Practice the Texture & Light Walk

Exercise: Take a 15-minute walk in your neighborhood or outside of your work (be sure you feel safe!) with the specific intent of seeing “textures and light patterns” only.

Note 3 new details each time you do this.

Done.

Easy, right?

The Science Behind Walking and Creative Thinking

This exercise has several perks. Walking to spark creativity is just one of them.

This article in Psychology Today refers to two studies that both found walking boosts creativity. The writer points out that walking in nature can be an added bonus as well.

Supercharging Mindfulness With Targeted Affirmations

Affirmations are a key part of the work I do with my clients.

Along with visualizations, these are creative ways we can learn to change our minds and design the lives we want to live. When I work with clients 1:1, I develop customized affirmations and visualizations that are specific to my client’s experience, goals and situation. This personalized experience is just one aspect that sets my work apart from cookie-cutter videos or audio files you may find online.

Supercharging your mindfulness by adding in affirmations is how to benefit from working with a trained self-hypnosis coach.

Creating Personalized Affirmations that Actually Work

I’d like to offer this additional help to add to your walk for an extra boost. Use the following affirmation while you walk by repeating this to yourself with each step:

I remain open-minded and curious about the world around me so that I feel creative, happy and joyful.

Final Thoughts: Designing Your Life with Intention

Remember: Creativity Isn't Lost. It Just Needs Rekindling.

Feeling stuck creatively doesn't mean your spark is gone forever. It's simply buried under routine, burnout, and the "I've seen it all before" mindset that creeps in during busy seasons.

You hold the key to reigniting that creative fire. Start today with just 15 minutes. All you need to do is go for a walk outside, observe three new patterns or textures, and repeat the affirmation above that reminds you to stay curious.

Small shifts in perspective compound over time, transforming numbness back into wonder, and exhaustion back into energy. As George Lois (art director, designer & author) said, "Creativity can solve any problem. The creative act, the defeat of habit by originality, overcomes everything."

Your next breakthrough begins with one mindful step. Take it now.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I overcome creative stagnation as a designer?

Try this 15-minute mindfulness walk focusing on textures and light patterns. Notice 3 new details each time, and repeat affirmations like "I remain open-minded and curious" to rekindle creative energy.

What causes creative burnout in architecture and design?

Creative burnout stems from long work hours, lack of support at work, and repetitive routines that trigger the "I've seen it all before" mentality, reducing mental capacity for original thinking.

Yes. Research shows outdoor walks combined with focused observation boost creative thinking by rewiring the brain to see everyday environments as fresh sources of inspiration rather than mundane.
